Adoption or Foster Information

Thank you fro your interest in adoption or fostering one of our precious pets!

Adoption Requirements

At Dogs and Cats Forever, our priority is to find stable, loving, and permanent homes for our animals. Below are our general adoption requirements. While these guidelines are in place to ensure the well-being of our pets, exceptions may occasionally be made on a case-by-case basis depending on the specific needs and circumstances of the animal.

As a private adoption agency, we reserve the right to approve or deny any application. Many of these requirements are based on the common reasons animals are surrendered to shelters. While we recognize that no adoption process can guarantee the future, our goal is to place every pet in a forever home where they will always feel safe and loved.

Additionally, if you ever find yourself unable to keep the pet you’ve adopted from us, our adoption contract requires that you return the animal to Dogs and Cats Forever so we can ensure their continued care and safety.

To Be Considered for Adoption:

  1. Age Requirement: You must be at least 25 years old.
  2. Identification: Provide a valid photo ID with your current address.
  3. Homeownership: You must own your home.
  4. Household Consent: Documented knowledge and consent from all adults in the household are required.
  5. Veterinary Reference: Provide a verifiable veterinary reference for your past or current pets. All pets in your household must be up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered.
  6. Home Visit: Agree to a home visit to ensure suitability.
  7. Household Suitability:
    • Appropriate for the animal’s age.
    • Appropriate for the animal’s temperament.
    • Appropriate for the animal’s weight and breed.
  8. Specific Requirements: Some animals may have additional needs, such as:
    • A fenced-in yard.
    • An adult-only home.
    • A home with no other animals.

By following these guidelines, we strive to create the best possible matches between pets and their adoptive families, ensuring a lifetime of happiness for both. Thank you for considering adoption and helping us give these animals a brighter future!

Fosters Save Lives!

Foster an Animal in Need, Become a FAN!

Have you ever wanted to help a homeless animal but felt unsure about a lifelong commitment or the financial responsibilities? Fostering is the perfect way to make a life-changing difference without the cost or permanence of adoption. At Dogs & Cats Forever, we provide all the medical care and supplies you may need, including donated food and litter. All you need to offer is a safe, loving space for these animals to thrive.

Who Needs Fosters? We are in urgent need of fosters for all kinds of animals, but especially:

  • Kittens and mother cats: These animals need a quiet, calm environment to grow and bond before they’re ready for adoption.
  • Bottle-feeding fosters: If you have experience with orphaned kittens, we need your help! Young, abandoned babies require round-the-clock feeding and care.
  • Shy or scared adult animals: Some pets have only ever known life in a home, so the shelter environment can be stressful and overwhelming. Foster homes provide a comfortable setting to help these animals regain confidence and prepare for their forever families.

Why Fostering Matters Young puppies and kittens, who cannot yet be vaccinated or spayed/neutered, cannot stay in the shelter. Foster homes are vital to saving these vulnerable animals. Additionally, fostering provides the socialization and one-on-one attention that nervous or overlooked animals need to shine.

Is Fostering Possible if I Have Other Pets? Absolutely! Fostering young babies often means keeping them separate from your other animals, but it’s as simple as closing a door. A spare room, office, or even a bathroom can become a cozy sanctuary. Dry bathtubs even make excellent playpens for kittens and puppies!

Ready to Make a Difference? If fostering sounds like the perfect fit for you, visit us during business hours at 4600 Selvitz Rd. in Ft. Pierce to fill out a foster application. Together, we can give these animals the second chance they deserve.
